Grand Harbour Marina enjoys the 40th Rolex Middle Sea Race, Malta

The 40th edition of the Rolex Middle Sea Race kicked off on the 19th of October with a fleet of 113 yachts taking part in this year’s race departing out of Malta’s Grand Harbour.

As if something out of a movie, the guns of the Valletta Saluting Battery marked a total of seven anticipated starts amongst a crowd of thousands who lined the Bastians of the Capital and Three Cities to watch the start of this iconic race.

The race brings together the crème de la crème of the sailing world in one place to battle it out on Malta’s seas. A long course was designed to offer an adrenaline-packed race that is perfect for the windier conditions of the autumn season. It starts and ends in Malta and takes yachts around Sicily, Lampedusa, Pantelleria and the Egadian and Eolian islands.

 

Today, The Rolex Middle Sea Race is known as one of the best sailing events of the year and it has been dubbed internationally as “the most beautiful racecourse in the world”.

George David’s American Maxi Rambler, which Grand Harbour Marina have once again hosted, was first to cross the finish line taking line honours for the fifth year in a row.

However, the real star of the show comes with the yacht and crew of ELUSIVE II. A Maltese Yacht which claimed the title of winners of this year’s Rolex Middle Sea Race which was a personal triumph for the Podesta Siblings  – Aaron, Christoph and Maya who have raced together in this race since 2002.

Witnessing this truly spectacular event is something that deserves to be on your bucket list. Watching the sleek yachts navigate the bastions of the harbour is something to admire and is guaranteed to be something that you never forget.
