Competitors in the 2015 RORC Transatlantic Race are gathering at Marina Lanzarote ahead of the start on Saturday 28 November
This year’s event sees a diverse fleet of boats preparing to face the 3,000 miles of ocean between Marina Lanzarote and Port Louis Marina in Grenada.
At 100 feet, Jean-Paul Rivière’s Nomad IV will be the largest boat on the start line, and will be eager to complete some unfinished business after being forced to retire with gear failure from last year’s race.
At the other end of the scale are several boats around 40’ overall, including the Class 40s Silvi Belle 2 (Mike Gascoyne) and Sensation (Marc Lepesqueux), along with Maurice Benzaquen’s Pogo 1250 Aloha, and the J/120 Nunatak which is being raced double-handed by Elin Haf Davies and Chris Frost.
The first boat to finish in Grenada is likely to be one of the two MOD 70 trimarans, either Lloyd Thornburg’s Phaedo3 or Tony Lawson’s Concise 10. Given the right wind conditions these two could complete the course in as little as five days and competition between them is certain to be fierce. But a third multihull – Gerald Bibot’s 42ft catamaran, Zed 6– will be chasing them all the way and pushing for the class win on corrected time.
