The Top 10 Bars in Grenada

Much, much more than mere watering holes.

The beautiful Caribbean islands of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique are indeed many things to many people. Grenada and the Grenadines offer so much in the way of climate, natural splendour, and genuinely warm and welcoming people. Known as the Spice Island, Grenada offers a lifestyle and atmosphere so unique and relaxing that you will feel your world, as you know it, slip away.

But apart from silky stretches of white sandy beaches, sunken treasures adorned by corals and unspoilt landscapes undiscovered by crowds, these enchanting islands also offer some of the finest drinking establishments in the entire Caribbean.

And here, we’ve listed our Top Ten Bars. Definitely a list well worth keeping.

1. Basil’s Bar, Mustique

This much-revered establishment is an institution in the Grenadines. Perched on stilts above the Caribbean Sea, this legendary watering hole hosts truly memorable times for people from far and wide. Some would argue that it is the greatest bar in the world. It’s been around for as long as people can remember and is frequented by yachters, tourist, locals and the occasional movie star or musician. A favourite haunt of Mick Jagger.

2. Happy Island, Union Island, St. Vincent & Grenadines

This genuinely unique bar is a small man-made island in the middle of Clifton Harbour comprised of conch shells, right next to the best kite surfing spot in the Caribbean. With no other purpose than to serve as an oasis for rum lovers, Happy Island is undoubtedly a Grenadines institution, constructed and run by Janti – the man who built the island – and his wife who live in the rear of the bar. Friday night barbecues are unmissable.

3. Umbrellas Beach Bar, Grand Anse, Grenada

Located on Grenada’s most famous and, justifiably, most popular beach – this is where great food, great service and great atmosphere come together. And you’ll always find a live band playing. Umbrellas Beach Bar is a well-run, lively and fairly sophisticated set-up, with indoor and outdoor seating, making it the perfect place to meet up with friends or to cool off from the beach. It’s such an idyll that you won’t want to leave. Ever.

4. Aquarium Restaurant and Bar, Point Salines, Grenada

It’s easy to see why this stunning restaurant, set amidst tropical gardens with koi ponds and a waterfall in the centre, is described as a ‘jungle by the sea’. The few walls are adorned with wonderful paintings and there are fascinating sculptures everywhere. The Sunday barbecue is one of the best ways to spend your day, listening to the live reggae band or swimming in the ocean just a pebble’s throw away. A very special place indeed.

5. Roger’s Barefoot Beach Bar, Hog Island, Grenada

This intimate and very laid back, ‘no shoes’ bamboo bar is an extraordinary haven, serving the ‘coolest’ drinks and the ‘hottest’ local dishes. It’s where you’ll find an interesting blend of locals, tourist and yachters as well as students from the University who make it over to the tiny islet every Sunday to enjoy the live music. Hog Island lies 30 metres off the south coast and is reached by boat. Roger is usually to be found in a hammock.

6. Victory Bar, Port Louis, Grenada

Located in the exquisite marina, with tables overlooking the yachts, this bar and eatery is a favourite haunt of ‘yachties’, where they exchange seafarers’ tales over their favourite cocktails, enjoy ‘beer o’ clock’ at any time of day or enjoy breakfast, fresh salads, burgers and seafood brochettes. The Texas style BBQ on Friday nights, like the view, is truly unforgettable. The perfect venue to sit and watch the world drift by.

7. Junction Bar, Lance aux Epines, Grenada

This charming watering hole and café lounge sited in a typical Caribbean style wooden house complete with shutters, is owned and run by Lisa, a leading Grenadian artist. The Junction is a popular meeting place for a wide variety of interesting people. The cuisine ranges from Grenadian and Greek to Mexican, and every night is music night, including karaoke, Latin, reggae and DJs. And the mojitos are legendary. Enjoy deeply.

8. The West Indies Brewery, L’Anse aux Epines Stretch, Grenada

This local is owned by The West Indies Beer Company, which supplies many bars on the island. Specialising in real ales, the beers are hand crafted by a Master Brewer using the finest malt and hops and then keg conditioned for perfect carbonation and rounded flavours. The bar is a beer lover’s paradise. Bring your own food or call ahead and they’ll prepare their BBQ for you. They also host Hog Roasts, Indian nights and other food events.

9. Bananas Restaurant, St. George’s, Grenada

This oasis is an inspiring location for food and nightlife. Days transform into unforgettable nights with the opening of the Restaurant and Bar at 4pm every day. Try the island’s only wood fired pizza from a terrific menu, relish a cold beer or cocktail in the Carib Cave or enjoy a more formal meal in romantic surroundings. Happy Hour is 5pm to 7pm while every Friday and Saturday, Bananas club opens at 10:30pm for dance lovers and partygoers.

10. Esther’s Bar, Grand Anse, Grenada

Situated on the beach opposite the Vendors Market, this family-run bar has been described has having the ‘best hole-in-the-wall on the beach atmosphere’. Barflies flock from miles around to be served by Esther’s son, Kimani – the Cocktail King. He’s famous for caring for his drinks and his customers in equal measure; a real gent. Some say he’s the finest mixologist on the island. Go and judge for yourself. Kick off with a mojito.
